"Rising Storm, in Moose River Valley, Me.," by James Fairman. This little gem is in Mr. Coale's collection, and is a fine piece of nature in miniature. The somber shadows and darkening, troublous heavens, the woody valleys and the stream are beautifully elaborated. Viewed at a proper distance, the perfect harmony in colors shows itself exquisitely. Fairman not only knows how to paint but how to choose his subjects with as keen a glance for the beautiful as ever inspired a poet. [Pp. 75-76.]
