This, we must confess, was almost our favorite in the collection. When viewed from a proper standpoint, it is charmingly natural. The grey, cloudy sky, the foaming torrent, the broken ground, and the trees in the background, are painted with exquisite fidelity. The price of this picture was set at $1,400 on the catalogue of Pettes & Leathe. [P. 100.] "The Mill in the Mountains," by Herzog. The scene is a foaming mountain stream; on one side an old mill and other buildings, trees in the background, and a foreground broken and uneven. The colors are very soft, very clear. The darkened sky, and the trees on the background, are to us the most pleasing points in the picture. The whole, however, is done well, and is finished with a close attention to the details of the landscape. [Pp. 108-109; see entry 02550044 for related commentary.]
