Pastile Drawing.--The first premium, Diploma and five dollars, was awarded to W.J. HINCHY, St. Louis. The drawing faithfully portrayed the delight experienced by votaries of the "meerschaum." One who appreciated this favorite kind of pipe had one of them in his mouth, and every feature was significant of pleasure. We think the artist also wished to convey the idea that he had just taken a few glasses of substantial lager, for there was a jolly, rubicund "sans souci" cast about his countenance, that is always produced by frequent potations of this favorite beverage. The second premium was awarded to a beautiful and expressive drawing by MISS MAGGIE BARBER, of St. Louis. [P. 131; see entry 02510195 for other work noted in this commentary. The words "meerschaum" and "sans souci" appear in italics in the catalogue.]
