PAINTINGS IN OIL OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM. (Original.) 1st premium, Diploma and $20; 2d Premium, Medal. In this department, Mr. Wm. Lucas of St. Louis entered an exquisite little Painting, which was excluded from competition on account of being the work of a foreign artist, having been imported by Mr. Lucas from Europe. It was of small cabinet size, being less than a foot long, but was very highly finished in its details in the manner of the celebrated Dusseldorf school. The subject was a familiar one--a Horse in a Stall, with several Chickens near his feet, and bundles of straw or hay round about; but, with these simple details, the artist, by his fidelity to nature and high finish, has accomplished a most pleasing and artistic work.
