Landscape, in Oil.--There were some very superb paintings under this heading, and not a single entry but what was meritorious. The painting to which was awarded the first premium, Diploma and twenty dollars, would have been pronounced a gem anywhere. A grove is the leading feature, and cows are wandering beneath and about the tempting shade. The whole atmosphere of the picture is artistic and beautiful, having that mellow light so apparent in nature, yet so difficult to imitate. [P. 97.]
