"Bust in marble or stone, or cast in bronze, original, Missouri made. - To the marble bust entered by Jas. W. McDonald was awarded the premium, diploma and twenty dollars. This was a fine marble bust of the late Col. Thos. H. Benton; and as this distinguished senator makes a part of the constellation of great men of our union that 'gem the heaven of fame,' and was one of the fathers of the present constitution of Missouri, it was looked upon with much interest. All who knew Col. Benton declared the bust a perfect likeness; while the artistical execution of the work was unquestioned." [P. 96.]
