8 x 10. Mr. Tait unquestionably stands at the head of American painters of wild animals, hunting pieces, bird compositions, etc. There is a power in his brush for reproducing the very texture of flesh, and feathers, and hair, which seems marvellous. It is observable in his smallest as well as largest compositions. This little piece--a deer standing over the fawn reclining on the grass--is rendered so "true to nature" as to make us feel its beauty and touching expression. [P. 247.]
