St. Paul.--From the Cardinal Fesch Gallery, (painting)
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 33
39 x 28. The Apostle here has a most noble characterization. He stands in the attitude of delivering one of his Epistles. A volume of Holy Writ is open in his left hand, while with his right he grasps the sword typical of his mission against the heathens and Jews. It is a very old work, and was rescued from one of the burning palaces of Rome, during the French siege, in 1849. The large majority of old and new originals, and copies in this collection, this year, were sent to this country after having been gathered, in a somewhat mutilated and injured condition. At great expense the Association has had them perfectly restored. [P. 57.]
