Born and now living in Brussels. As a marine painter, Clays stands at the head of the Belgian School. Nothing can be more charming and clever than the transparent and luminous colors employed by this artist, shedding a rich, golden light, which is diffused with all the truthfulness of nature, over the sky, sea, and land, and every object he represents. Clays is accorded an honorable place in the best collections of Europe, and his pictures are steadily increasing in value and esteem. [P. 9.]
