ZAMPIERI, (Domenico,) called DOMENICHINO: born at Bologna. (1581-1641.) Eclectic school. Martyrdom of St. Lawrence, who was executed A.D. 258, by the Prefect of the Roman Emperor Valerian, whilst the Emperor himself was absent from Rome and engaged in the Persian War. 4'10 x 6'7. Note.--Chevalier Morell, who was formerly an officer in the household of Joachim Murat, King of Naples, while commanding a foraging party, took this picture from a convent near Bologna. It was carried to Naples, where, after the death of his master, he kept it secreted until the Revolution of 1848, when it was purchased from him. [Pp. 21-22.]
