Exhibition Catalogs
Date:
1876
Notes:
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 35
This scene represents the first reading of the Declaration of Independence, at Independence Square, Philadelphia, July 4th, 1776. It was read from the Rittenhouse Observatory, which was removed some twenty years after. The old State House still remains in good preservation. If ROTHERMEL had painted no other picture, this alone would insure him the title of "Artist" and the respect of all true lovers of Art. [P. 16.]
