Exhibition Catalogs
Date:
1876
Notes:
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 70
The honor paid to St. Sebastian as one of the Great Patron Saints of Christendom has always made his martyrdom a favorite subject of the pencil. . . . Having with his two friends Marcus and Marcellinus secretly embraced Christianity, the fact remained for some time undiscovered. . . . At length . . . they were denounced to the Governor . . . whereupon he was also seized and ordered to be bound to a tree, and shot to death by arrows. [P. 18.]
