The artist represents the beautiful martyr, St. Agnes, on trial before Turtullus, the Roman judge, in the tenth persecution of the Christians. At the right of the platform stands the base informer, and prominent in the group on the left of the scene is the aristocratic Roman matron, Fabiola, who is ready to transfer her robe to the resolute martyr in token of her sympathy with the Christian religion.
