General Lafayette visited Mt. Vernon in August, 1784, spending two weeks with General Washington, under his hospitable roof--which is the period chosen for illustration. The two Generals, with Mrs. Washington and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Stuart (formerly Mrs. Parke Custis), are the principal figures in the group collected under the portico. The landscape is by the late Louis R. Mignot, and the figures by T.P. Rossiter, deceased. [P. 33.] 01860537 FOR COMMENTARY ON SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF THIS PICTURE)
