This picture represents a village school examination. The Burgomaster sits there dressed all in black, gold-headed cane in hand, smiling encouragment upon the trembling boy to whom he is putting his questions, while the old spectacled schoolmaster is trying to catch the eye of the lad, and signifying to him that the answer to the pastor's question is three. It is a powerful picture. [P. 25.]
