Prize No. 4. SCHUSSELE'S Great National Painting of the American Authors, entitled, "Washington Irving and his Friends." Painted from a sketch by DARLEY. Valued at Five Thousand Dollars. This Magnificent Work of Art is about 7 by 10 feet in size, and the original from which the Superb Steel Engraving (to be issued to shareholders) is engraved. It is now exhibiting by the Association in Cincinnati. The value of this noble painting will yearly increase. It represents an interior view of Irving's Library at Sunnyside. In the centre of a group of fifteen American Literary Celebrities is seated the amiable and unassuming Irving. Around this genial sun the artist has traced the principal stars of our brilliant literary system. Upon the right and left, and in Irving's immediate vicinity, are Prescott, Cooper, Bancroft, Longfellow, and in a wider circle revolve Emerson, Kennedy, Bryant, Paulding, Willis, Hawthorne, Halleck, Holmes, Simms and Tuckerman--the whole group forming a constellation of which every American should be justly proud.
