Born in South Carolina in 1834; was the originator of the "Liberty Tree" in America. When Major Andre was executed, General Gadsden was tauntingly admonished to prepare for death, as he would be made the retaliatory sacrifice. He firmly replied, "I am always prepared to die for my country." He died in 1805. [P. 11.]
