Born in 1751 at Serpa in Portugal. Knight of the order of Christ, counsellor of legation of his royal higness [sic] the prince regent of Portugal, and for several years his agent general in England. Fellow of the royal society of London and associate of the French Institute, member of the royal academies of Lisbon, Stockholm, Turin, Florence, of the Linnean Society of England and of the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, and of 21 other learned societies. Author of several essays on literature, physiological botany, and a history of Portugal. Now in the United States. [P. 52.]
