A descendant of a branch of the West family distinguished in the wars of Edward 3d and among the first who embraced Quakerism. The greater part of his family having accompanied William Penn on his second visit to Pennsylvania, John West joined them in 1714; married and settled near Philadelphia, raised ten children, of whom the celebrated Benjamin West is the youngest.
