'Lord Cardinal, if thou think'st on heaven's bliss,/ hold up thy hands; make signal of thy hope:/ he dies and makes no signs - O god forgive him.' Shakespear's Henry VI. In the Cardinal's face is powerfully depicted remorse and despair." [P. 294.]
