"SPAGNOLETTO, (Guiseppe Ribera.)--Born at Kativa, near Valencia, in 1589; he studied in Italy, under Michael Angelo Carravaggio. Like that master, he painted with bold, broad lights and shadows, and gave so great a force to his pictures, that the works of most other artists when placed next them, appear comparatively weak and feeble in their effect." No. 14.--THE ANGEL APPEARING TO THE SHEPHERDS.--This is a good specimen of the master, beautifully painted, and in fine preservation. [P. 35; a printed note at the bottom of the page reads: "The picture belongs to the estate of Henry Brevoort, Esq. The above name should be written Henry Brevoort, Esq."]
