"STEEN, (Jan,) this extraordinary artist was born in Leyden in 1638. Few painters have animated their figures more than him, or equalled him in the strength of expression. His touch is light, easy, and free, and his colouring is always lively and natural, and is characterized by a mellow harmony and appropriateness." No. 30--PORTRAIT OF A LADY--on panel. This is a life-like and most excellent picture. [P. 25.]
