St. Jerome reading the Scriptures by candlelight, (painting)
Honthorst b. 1592
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 2
"Honthorst--or Gherardo Delle Notti--born at Utrecht in 1592. He travelled to Italy and became one of the best artists of his time. He excelled in representing figures by candle-light, which usually were as large as life: whence he obtained the name of Gherardo delle Notti. His pencil is fine and firm, and his colouring has great force." No. 2.--St. Jerome reading the Scriptures by candle-light: the expression of interest and devotion in the saint is very good, and the painting is otherwise a characteristic and good specimen of the artist.
