"This picture is not painted, as it appears to be; but is a mosaic of stone. the art of mosaic work is nowhere so well understood as in italy, where the great variety of coloured stones affords the material for its execution. small blocks of these stones of different colors, or varying shades of color, are put together with a fine cement to form the picture."
