"The very high quality of this picture claims for it a more lengthy eulogium than the rule laid down in the completion of the catalogue will permit; it must, therefore, suffice to observe that it is considered not only an indubitable specimen of the great master to whom it is assigned, but also one of his very finest works. Nothing can possibly exceed the truth and elevation of expression in the countenance, which is the very perfection of devotion and adoration, and to the accomplishment of which no other master than dolci was probably ever equal. " Mr. Paff possessed this picture a great many years, and although very large sums were repeatedly offered for it, he never could be induced to part with it." [P. 29; indicated in catalogue as an attribution only to the artist named.]
