"This picture, although painted upwards of 350 years, retains all the freshness and purity of color as though it were the work of yesterday. Mr. Paff prized it among the most valuable pictures in his collection, and was of opinion that from its having been in existence so long before the celebrated picture of Rubens of this subject, that that great master may have referred to it in the composition of his picture, in which particular it so greatly resembles." [p. 22; indicated in catalogue as an attribution only to the artist named.]
