Type:

Exhibition Catalogs
Date:
1876
Notes:
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 7
This picture is named by the artist "Life in the Cellar." It is similar in character to the "Wine Testers," (No. 65) which has won a world wide reputation, and a large circulation through a splendid lithograph. The scene is a familiar one to Germans, whose "underground adventures" it so humorously daguerreotypes. Hasenclever is doubtless one of the most humorous of living artists. The figure to the right, with a cigar, is that of the artist himself. [P. 10; see entry 01550065 for other work noted in this commentary.]
