T. Cole, N.A. Mr. Cole placed himself at the head of American landscape painters before visiting Europe, in 1820. In this achievement he struggled with difficulties only paralleled in Romance; talents, with virtue, conquered. In Italy Mr. Cole painted many fine pictures; and we are happy to say more, and finer, since his return. (See Hist. of Arts of Des.) [P. 5.]
