Study for a portion of the "Destruction of Jerusalem," designed by Prof. Kaulbach, executed under his direction by his pupil J. Muhr. The painter says of this picture: "The composition of this painting is a part of one of Kaulbach's most celebrated works, the Destruction of Jerusalem. For the last eight years, I, with my friend Echter, have executed the frescoes of Kaulbach in the New Museum at Berlin, and this group was painted by me as a study of the picture to which it belongs. In an artistic point of view, therefore, it can be considered as an original. It is, besides, the only copy in existence in this form and an an independent picture. I am convinced that this painting will please in America, for it embodies the most beautiful of all Kaulbach's conceptions, and, as regards the execution, is so thoroughly in his spirit, that all the artist of this city look upon it as painted by himself."
