In the year 1782, Schiller, being in danger of arrest on account of desertion from his very irksome post of regimental physician in the Wurtemberg army, and deeply involved in pecuniary difficulties, spent some time in strict seclusion and concealment on the estate of Baurbach, in Thuringia, which was placed at his disposal by its owner, Madame de Wolzogen, one of his patrons.
