The mother is already busy with her sewing; the oldest child is up too, and the breakfast despatched [Soc]. Only the baby in the cradle is still asleep, and does not want to wake up. At last the mother lifts the cloth which is hung over the cradle to keep off the light, for a curious peep at the little sleeper. The sister, too, approaches softly, and gently touches his arm upon which he suddenly opens his eyes, and begins sucking his thumb. [P. 22; price noted by a contemporary hand.]
