Illustration for Cooper's novels--India Ink, (drawing)
Darley, F. O. b. 1822
Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 184
Darley, Felix O.--Born in Philadelphia, 1822. At the age of 26 he executed for the American Art Union his well known outline illustrations of "Rip Van Winkle," and the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow." A competent German critic has declared these to be superior to Retzch's outlines illustrating Goethe's "Faust." He has besides these executed similar illustrations of Judd's "Margaret." But the works which he has enriched with his smaller illustrations are too numerous to mention here; they include the novels of Cooper, Neal, Dickens and others, and have been much admired in England and on the Continent. [Appendix; exhibited under heading: "Water Colors, Crayon Drawings, &c."]
