Hicks, Thomas.--Born in Newton, Banks Co., Pa., in 1823, began his artist life at 15. First studied in Philadelphia, subsequently at National Academy, N.Y. Went to Europe in 1875, and remained four years studying at Rome and Paris. Now resides in New York, and is a a great favorite as a portait [sic] painter. Is a finished artist, and noted for excellence of his likenesses, and the expression of character which he throws into face and figure. [Appendix.]
