Poussin, Gaspar.--Born at Rome 1613; died there in 1675. Great landscape painter; excelled in all the points of sky, cloud, atmosphere, foliage, perspective, &c. He was so rapid a workman that he would paint a well finished landscape in a single day. His first style was dry and hard, but he adopted a more mellow tone after studying the works of Claude Lorraine. [Appendix.]
