Van Ostade, Adrian.--Born at Lubeck, 1610, died at Amsterdam 1685. Great genre painter. Executed about 400 works. His drawing was perfect, his grouping and composition admirable, his coloring rich, clear, and harmonious. All of his pictures have a wonderful finish. They now bring exhorbitant [sic] prices whenever one is offered for sale. His subjects were mostly scenes in the peasant life of Holland. [Appendix.]
