In removing an old lining to reline this picture, the back of the picture was found to bear this inscription: Maria Pfisterin, Nata Pfieferin, aetatis suae 58, Franc; Jos; Degle, pinx. ano. 1778. One of the most celebrated of modern portrait painters remarked of this portrait, that the hands were enough to establish the artist's fame. This picture is remarkable for correct drawing, great truth to nature, exquisite finish and beautiful coloring. [P. 3.]
