"A venerable lady appears to be in consultation with her son who is on the point of departure to assume command of his regiment. The artist is considered the Meissonnier of Germany adopting a similar mode of high finish with the most transparent coloring. The picture was painted to order for the present collection and is considered by the artist one of his finest works." [P. 18; price noted by contemporary hand.]
