Painted in Rome in 1860, when Greybeard and Whitelocks besieged me in Autumn. The Theseus--a jolly blade--lounges in my studio modestly in the background. Neither this, or the pendant portrait, are quite finished. When she gets her gloves on--if ladies ever do--and I get my palette ready--if painters ever do--we may come out right yet. [P. 7; see entry 06650016 for companion piece.]
