Lectotypification of Attalea monogyna Burret (1929)
1. 1929: Attalea monogyna Burrett (Notizbl. Bot. Gard. Berlin-Dahlem 10:534. 1929) was described, stating that it might be the same as A. oleifera Barb.-Rodr., Rev. Braz. 7:123, t. 58. 1903. Burret's description stated that it was based on Glaziou 22269 (although he also added Glaziou 22270 among specimens studied), presumably using material at Berlin (not so stated). This "new" species is not in the index of the journal!
2. 1972: Sidney Glassman (Revis. Dahlgren's Index Amer. Palms: 25. 1972) cited only "(Glaziou 22269 - BR)" in the place where he mentioned a type, but without using the word. His introduction (p. [v]) does talk about what he means in citing type specimens, mentioning words like "lectotype " and "neotype" and it is argued that Glassman here rather cryptically but effectively lectotypified Burret's species name. He, like Burret, also suspected this "new" species was a synonym of A. oleifera Barb.-Rodr.
3. 1977: Glassman published "Preliminary taxonomic studies in the palm genus Attalea" (Fieldiana Bot. 38: 1977). On p. 45 he treated A. monogyna Burret as a synonym of A. oleifera Barb.-Rodr. and for Burret's name he said "Lectotype: Brazil, Goias, Serra dos Pyreneos (Glaziou 22269 - BR[ussels]. c.f. Glassman 1972, p. 25.
4. 1999: Glassman published "A taxonomic treatment of the palm subtribe Attaleinae" Ill. Biol. Monogr. 59. on p. 47 he accepts Attalea geraensis Barb.-Rodr. (as 'ceraensis' with "? Attalea monogyna Burret in synonymy. For the latter he now announces "Glaziou 22269 (holotype, B, destroyed; isotypes, BH!,BR!,K!,MO!,P!, US!). There is a further discussion on p. 49 explaining why he previously treated A. monogyna Burret as a synonym of A. oleifera but has changed his mind. He seems to have forgotten that he designated the BR specimen as "Lectotype" in his two earlier papers.
BOTTOM LINE: I think the US specimen should be: 1. Added to the type collection as an isolectotype af Attalea monogyna Burret as a consequence of Glassman (in Fieldiana Bot. 38:1977) having cited "Glaziou 22269 BR as lectotype. 2. Identified as Attalea geraensis Barb.-Rodr. (as 'cearensis') as cited by Glassman (in Ill. Biol. Monor. 59:47. 1999) with "? Attalea monogyna Burret" in synonymy.
