Vermont Historical Society

Collection description
This small watercolor painting described as having been created by a slave sometime before the civil war was donated to the Vermont Historical Society on July 11, 1967. Mrs. Edmund H. Royce donated the piece along with photographs taken by the donor of St. Albans. On August 13, 1979, Philip F. Elwert wrote to director John R. Kinard offering the piece did not fit within the Vermont Historical Society's "collecting guidelines." He could not validate or disporve the statement regarding its origin, and the original donor is deceased.
