The Serving Spoons program at Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, DC is a clinical volunteer program to enhance nutritional intake of frail-elderly patients at the hospital. It represents a simple but powerful way to reduce the use of intravenous feeding for the frail elderly. The program helped to reduce costs and improve the clinical outcomes of Greater Southeast's frail-elderly patients.
Greater Southeast Community Hospital selected the name Serving Spoons to capture the program's essence: to serve frail-elderly patients with a spoon of food, demonstrating the hospital's respect for patients as dignified individuals in need of help.
