Description:
Woodcarving is the only art of the Maroon culture that has received any recognition by the outside world. Maroon style carvings have been featured in the interior of several Paramaribo's (Suriname capitol) public buildings and are the most popular items purchased by tourists. Woodcarving is the responsibility of Maroon men as they are expected to make an array of practical objects including canoes, paddles, stools, combs, and rice winnowing trays like this one for his wives and kinswomen.
