Description:
Mary Proctor (1960-) sees herself as a Missionary, and her goal is to use her art, like this door painting, to spread her message.
Her paintings usually illustrate stories from her life, and members of her family, and usually include a message or a lesson that she wants to share. She adds found objects from her junkyard in Tallahassee to her paintings.
Her work was featured in the exhibition, On Their Own: Selected Works by Self-Taught African American Artists, January 31 through June 12, 2005 at the Anacostia Community Museum, Smithsonian Institution.
