Reco Reco Percussion Instrument

view Reco Reco Percussion Instrument digital asset number 1
Wood, animal skin, and leather.
The reco reco is a Brazilian musical instrument closely related to the guiro, which is Caribbean in origin. The reco reco is an important component in the capoeira roda, a complex cultural phenomenon that combines elements of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian cultures, martial arts, music, art, and dance. Invoking cultural traditions, from both the Old World and the New, and reflecting the blending of those cultures that first occurred during the years of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, capoeira evolved into a uniquely Brazilian phenomenon.
Dr. Turner undoubtedly acquired this reco reco during the time he spent in Bahia in the early 1940s, as it would reflect in a single object the very essence of the blending of cultures that he was studying.
