[Riverside Church and General Grant Memorial]

view [Riverside Church and General Grant Memorial] digital asset number 1
Aiken, James S.
watercolor and graphite on watercolor paper
National Origin:
Painted from open-air observation James S. Aiken focuses on the Riverside Church (center) and General Grant Memorial (right) in his rendering of this notable Manhattan skyline. The translucence of the watercolor pigments and his loose brushstrokes allow Aiken to create an authentic horizon filled with light and airy clouds. Though he does not focus on rendering elements within the composition true to life the viewer is still able to clearly identify pedestrians walking, streetlights, and even a car on the street.
