An interview of William Ashby McCloy conducted in three sessions, 1982 Oct. 19, 1992 May 20, and 1992 June 30, by Robert F. Brown, for the Archives of American Art.
McCloy discusses his childhood and youth in China; athletic prowess; his education at Phillips Andover, Yale School of Art; his interest in art education; studying the Old Masters; painting techniques; teaching positions at Drake University and the University of Wisconson, where he assisted John Steuart Curry in murals; recollections of Curry; his WWII service, and his work as director of the School of Art, University of Manitoba.

Biography Note:
William Ashby McCloy (1913-2000) was a painter, printmaker, teacher, art historian, and teacher from Uncasville, Conn.
This interview is part of the Archives of American Art Oral History Program, started in 1958 to document the history of the visual arts in the United States, primarily through interviews with artists, historians, dealers, critics and administrators.
