Gates sketchbook contains sketches in charcoal and pastels. Sketches are primarily rural landscapes or cityscapes of places Gates has been including West Virginia, the Virgin Islands, Colorado Springs and Port Clyde, Me. Some sketches of animals (cows, horses, gulls, and a cat named Moritz). Two leaves pressed between pages. Front cover reads: M. Gates; 1934-40; W. Va., Virgin Is., Colorado Sprgs., Port Clyde, Maine.
