Benton at work on a clay model in preparation for a mural. UPI photo.
A laboriously-made, three dimensional clay model lets Benton observe the proper perspective for the final work. He owns more than100 pipes, but sometimes finds them distracting while working, and chews tobacco instead.
Thomas Hart Benton, 1959 / unidentified photographer. Louise Bruner papers, 1945-1976. Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
