Peale is the creator of the lecture, but this copy is not in his hand. A note at the top of the first page explains: The original of this was purchased at the [illegible, page cut off] George N. Tatham [?] and is in the possession of his family. This was copied for me by his son George; [signed] M. J. Peale Identity of M.J. Peale is uncertain, perhaps one of Rembrandt Peale's children. Date is based on the fact that Peale presented this lecture at the New York Historical Society on June 16th, 1857. The lecture discusses the canon of portraits depicting Washington.
