Summary:
Letters, writings, exhibition and loan files, legal records, a scrapbook, photographs, printed material, and audio visual material relating to sculptor, painter, and race car driver Salvatore Scarpitta.
Letters, both personal and professional, are from friends, galleries and institutions. Writings include Scarpitta's travel diary, 1990. Exhibition and loan files, some containing financial information, document Scarpitta's work. Legal records pertain to Scarpitta's estate. A scrapbook contains drawings by Scarpitta and photographs. Additional loose photographs are of Scarpitta, Scarpitta with his work (many of sprint cars), with his friends and associates, and with his family. Audio visual material (1.0 linear feet) includes VHS tapes and DVDs documenting conversations and projects by Scarpitta.

Biography Note:
Salvatore Scarpitta (1919-2007) was a sculptor, painter, and race car driver in Los Angeles, California and New York, N.Y. Salvatore Scarpitta was born in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Monuments Man. Scarpitta lived in Rome after World War II. In 1958 he moved to New York and was represented by the Leo Castelli Gallery. At the Castelli Gallery, Scarpitta received 10 solo exhibitions and was involved in numerous group shows. His work included multimedia canvases, sleds, and sprint cars.
